{"id":1584,"date":"2013-05-23T00:01:41","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T00:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chickenfish.cc\/bio\/?p=1584"},"modified":"2014-04-03T04:23:51","modified_gmt":"2014-04-03T04:23:51","slug":"malabar-gourd-cabell-dangel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chickenfish.cc\/bio\/malabar-gourd-cabell-dangel\/","title":{"rendered":"Malabar Gourd &#8211; cabell d&#8217;\u00e0ngel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malabar Gourd (cabell d&#8217;\u00e0ngel) &#8211; Cucurbita ficifolia<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cucurbita_ficifolia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cucurbita_ficifolia\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cucurbita_ficifolia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This a great producing cucurbit that is a separate species from the usual melons, squash and pumpkins that people often mistake it for.<\/p>\n<p>The plant grows fast and large in a range of environments and it should be grown much more commonly than it is.\u00a0It does spread quite quickly so you need a lot of space for it and it should be grown on a large trellis system or on a sturdy fence. I have found that the fruits form much better if they are lifted from the ground. It is self pollinating so you only need one vine if desired.<\/p>\n<p>It is a &#8216;short lived&#8217; perennial &#8211; so it will keep on going through winter if the weather permits.<\/p>\n<p>The fruit is upwards of\u00a0about\u00a030cm in diameter.
