{"id":1045,"date":"2011-12-08T08:45:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-08T08:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chickenfish.cc\/bio\/?p=1045"},"modified":"2014-07-04T11:37:47","modified_gmt":"2014-07-04T11:37:47","slug":"solanum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chickenfish.cc\/bio\/solanum\/","title":{"rendered":"Solanum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Solanum is a mysterious group of plants that include potatoes, tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplants and a whole lot of strange berries.\u00a0Although this is a pretty big genus there are only a few of them that will grow in the local climate here.\u00a0I have found growing some either inside for most of the year or at least inside the cold glasshouse I have is the only possible way.<\/p>\n<p>They seem to like sun with heat and never too damp and cold. it&#8217;s very hard to grow the Australian native ones especially\u00a0here as it&#8217;s just too damp and cold for a lot of the year. They just drop leaves and die at the slightest damp cold period. I have found growing them inside in a very bright dry space on a watering tray seems best and keeps them moving and the fungus and mould from affecting them.<\/p>\n<p>Our growing season is too short for really big crops of Tomatoes and Tomatillos although this varies year to year and the placement in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solanum<\/p>\n<p>The plants I&#8217;m growing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potatoes<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Solanum tuberosum &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>We have a selection of about 20 varieties grown mainly in individual containers. These keep the varieties topped up and growing and then I focus on\u00a01 or two that are grown in larger containers each year so that they can be eaten.<\/p>\n<p>Favourites include Sapphire, Dutch Cream, Purple Congo, Kipfler, King Edward, pink fir, banana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomatoes<\/strong> &#8211; <em><em>Solanum<\/em> lycopersicum &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>These are grown in the ground and I usually save the seed for the ones that keep coming back strong. We grow a lot of the small to tiny varieties due to their great taste and also they tend to grow faster and fruit more effectively with a short growing season that we often have here.<\/p>\n<p>Favourites include the Thai pink, tiny tom, black russian, green zebra and the tiny riesentraube<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eggplants<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>Solanum melongena &#8211;<\/em> several varieties but mainly small sizes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eggplant Ethiopian<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>Solanum\u00a0aethiopicum<\/em> &#8211; given to me by someone who spotted it at a food market in Sydney &#8211; first year growing 2011<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tamarillos<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Solanum betaceum &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>growing red and yellow varieties in cold glasshouse and both seem pretty happy<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pepino<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>Solanum muricatum &#8211; <\/em>perennial but need to keep propagating by cutting as they tend to die quickly when stressed by cold<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wonder berry<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>Solanum retroflexum\u00a0&#8211;<\/em> fairly easy to grow and fruit<\/p>\n<p><strong>Golden fruit of the andes<\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211; Solanum quitoense\u00a0&#8211;<\/em>\u00a0large fruit and crazy coloured leaves and plant yet to fruit &#8211; also known as\u00a0naranjilla<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kangaroo appl<\/strong>e<em> &#8211; probably Solanum aviculare &#8211; <\/em>struggling to survive<\/p>\n<p>I would like to grow bush tomatoes but it&#8217;s too cold and damp here.<\/p>\n<p>Also growing other plants in same Solanaceae\u00a0family such as <strong>Cape Gooseberry<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Physalis\u00a0<\/em><i>peruvians<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Tomatillos<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; <em>Physalis philadelphica<\/em><b> &#8211;\u00a0<\/b>Solanum &#8211;\u00a0see mexican flavours post &#8211; growing about 3 different varieties. Although a different Genus they are in the same solanum family\u00a0and have very similar growing requirements.\u00a0But limiting myself here in this post to the genus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tamarillo<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>Solanum betaceum<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chickenfish.cc\/bio\/archives\/1045\/tamarillo\" rel=\"attachment
